Rig Review - The 20w Plexi

The Plexi – by: Ben Scott

“Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Ace Frehley, Slash, Randy Rhoads…… and the list goes on and on.  What do these guys have in common?  These guys are “Guitar Gods”, and while their individual tone varies greatly, they’ve all utilized the Plexi at some point in time while creating some of the most iconic guitar tones the world has ever known.

I took one of these amps out to a gig one night to see what it really could do, and I’ve got to say, the first set was an absolute disaster.  I ran the amp in the 5w position while attempting to “gain it up” with my pedal board while maintaining a low stage volume.  To put it simply, that was a mistake.  During the break, I bumped the amp into the 20w position and plugged my gold top straight into it.  That’s where the magic started.

Don’t let the size of this little amp fool you, it’s an absolute MONSTER!  You see, I tried to make the amp into something that it wasn’t.  The amp didn’t like that anymore than we like it when our wives try to turn us into something or someone that we aren’t.  When I embraced the amp for what it was, turned it up, and quit covering up it’s inner beauty with pedals….. it came to life.  Just because this amp comes in a small package doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have that Plexi sound, vibe, and mojo oozing out of its pores.

If you’re looking for a quiet amp, keep looking.  This one isn’t for you.  If you’re looking for that iconic “Plexi” sound in a compact format at a more manageable volume, look no further.  The 20w Plexi “mini” is one of my absolute favorite amps out there right now on the market.”
