Kathleen Berk

Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone

Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Duquesne University; graduate studies at the University of Redlands, Sacramento State University, and Duquesne University; Studied with Bernard Cerilli, Bernard Goldberg, and Nestor Koval all from the Pittsburgh Symphony; Studied with Bernard Portnoy.  High School band director for five years and seven years as middle school band director; private lessons taught throughout this time.

Professional experience as Principal Clarinetist in the Greensburg Symphony, auxiliary woodwinds with the Nashville Symphony and the Savannah Symphony, 10 years’ experience at Opryland, USA playing in pit orchestras fro shows, various recording work including a Grammy Award winning recording, playing in orchestras for Broadway Shows including Ragtime, Chicago, Peter Pan, and Hello Dolly.  Freelance work including backing Pat Boone, Rich Little, Lee Greenwood, Nell Carter, Louise Mandrell, Teresa Brewer, Warren Covington, Urbie Green, The Fifth Dimension, Leslie Ugums, The Mills Brothers, The Four Tops and The Temptations.

Member of the International Clarinet Association and the American Federation of Musicians

Will Cash


Will Cash is an established local performer as well as an instructor. He has been teaching a variety of styles from Rock to Jazz since 2006. He also worked as director of Camp Jam Birmingham in summer 2012 and as an instructor from 2008 - 2011. His primary studies were in classical/jazz guitar and music theory at The University Alabama Birmingham. Other notable studies were with the late Jeff Harbaugh (Tony Bennett, REO Speedwagon, Doobie Brothers) in Auburn Alabama. Will most recently performs throughout the southeast with The Black Jacket Symphony, Eat A Peach, Tragic City, The Stephen McCullough Band and Jackson Capps. In the past he has worked with artists such as Jive Soul, India Ramey, Matt Slocum (Rich Robinson, Jimmy Herring), Erin Mitchell, Stuart McNair & the Contraband and Bonus Round. Whether you are a beginner or and advanced player Will is going to find the most productive way for you to learn.

Peyton Grant

Piano, Keyboards, Organ

Peyton Grant attended the Univsity of Montevallo, where he studied Music Composition.  Later, he went to the University of Alabama Birmingham where studied technology and jazz. He has been in various bands over the last 10 years and is a core member in the Black Jacket Symphony.  He plays and teaches all styles of music (rock, jazz, classical, movie music, blues, gospel, country, bluegrass, funk, and soul) with a focus on commercial music rather than classical music.  Peyton has been teaching since 2007 and excels at teaching beginner students, though he has had successes with students of all ages and skill levels from age 4 to 84,  Peyton is always open to new things and any type of music you would like to bring in.

Taylor Propp

Bass Guitar

Taylor Propp, born in New Orleans LA, has been a professional bassist in Birmingham, Al since 1996. He received his degree in Music Technology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2001), where he studied with Cleave Eaton (Count Basie Orchestra, Ramsey Lewis). 

He has been teaching privately at Bailey Brothers, Highland Music and other locations for over fourteen years. Taylor has performed locally and regionally with Nationwide Coverage, Meteorite and G-Soul for over a decade. He has been employed at Shades Mountain Baptist Church, Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and Cathedral Church of the Advent and has worked with artists/groups such as: Mark Avant's Night Flight Big Band, Ruben Studdard, Chris Fryar (Zac Brown Band), Mark Kimbrell (Oteil & the Peacemakers), Carlos Pino and other various local groups. Taylor has also been employed with Red Mountain Theater Company for over 6 years, and has performed at the Alabama Shakespheare Festival in Montgomery, as well as the UAB theater. In addition to teaching acoustic and electric bass in any genre, Taylor also teaches beginning piano, music composition and theory.

Leif Bondarenko

Drums, Percussion

Leif Bondarenko has been playing drums professionally for 36 years.  Leif attended Vestavia Hills High School where he earned top honors in state snare competitions and eventually graduated from the Alabama School of Fine Arts where he studied music theory and played in the Alabama Youth Symphony.  Leif then continued his education at Belmont College where he studied music business and recording techniques.  Over the past three decades Leif has built a reputation for himself as one of the top local drummers and has recorded and performed with some of the most talented musicians in Birmingham.  Leif has also toured nationally and has shared the stage with some of the industries' top musicians.  Artists that Leif has worked with include, but are not limited to, Alice Cooper, Jimmy Hall, Damon Johnson, Rick Danko of The Band, Charles Neville, Taylor Hicks, and Rollin' in the Hay.  Leif can teach all styles of music to anyone interested in playing drums.  His lesson programs cover everything from snare drum rudiments and drum set playing to practical applications involving playing music with other musicians.

Tommy Bowen


Tommy Bowen has been the top trumpet of every UAB and Samford music ensemble.  After transferring out of Samford where he studied trumpet performance, he attained his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he concentrated in Music Technology and Digital Music Production.  At UAB, he led organizations like Blaze Productions, where he orchestrated UAB's first battle of the bands.  Tommy has recorded and played trumpet with some of the best musicians in the south, including Taylor Hicks, Bad Brad and the Sipsey Slims, Rick Carter, Downright, and The Black Jacket Symphony.

Tim Kelly

Guitar, Bass Guitar

Tim Kelly was classically trained in guitar and piano at the University of Montevallo where he received his bachelors degree.  Tim has been teaching and playing professionally for 20 years and his credits include Black Jacket Symphony among other local and regional acts.  Tim teaches group guitar lessons utilizing his own four-part course that serves as a technique and theory introduction for people who have never played an instrument of all ages.  Combining vital techniques and basic music theory, the course serves as a great entry point for anyone interested in playing the guitar.  Many who have taken the course have gone on to enter private lessons and continue their guitar and music education.

Tifani Magwood


Tifani Magwood began playing the piano around the age of 9.  She studied at the Birmingham Southern College Conservatory of Music for eight years, then completed a piano performance degree from Samford University.  Tifani is currently completing a secondary music degree at the University of Alabama and plays for a church in the greater Birmingham area.

Originally from Lima, Peru, Arturo LaCruz has over 25 years of experience in music, sound, and technology, as an educator, musician, producer, composer, and sound engineer for multiple production domains. He studied professional architecture and design in his native country of Peru. Composition & Arranging studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston, holds a BA in Music from UMASS (specializing in Ethnomusicology and Impressionist Tonal Development, Magna Cum Laude. President’s Circle), Graduate Church Music Studies and an MTS and an M.Div in Early Western Thought, Music and Media Ministry Development, and Mentorship, from Samford University and Beeson Divinity School. He is an active music producer and performs in music festivals and specialty venues. As a Samford University Instructor, he successfully conceived, designed and taught the first series of popular guitar instruction courses, Guitar 101 and 201. In Kansas City, he taught and designed College courses dealing with Church Music, Production, and Theology. In addition he has taught music production seminars and college level Music and Worship Theology, both in the USA and Latin America (Peru and Mexico). He can also be seen as the featured Recording Studio Consultant in the new Hollywood remodeling show Fix It and Finish
